Je voulais sortir la critique en même temps que le topo vidéo, mais ce dernier prendra un peu plus de temps avant de sortir. Voici donc mon opinion face au premier Montreal Hip Hop Awards.

I wanted to drop the written review and the video one at the same time, but the latter will be ready later. Here’s my opinion about the first Montreal Hip Hop Awards.
Disons que ça n’a pas très bien commencé. Avec la sortie du site un peu prématurée qui affichait plusieurs erreurs, je ne partais pas avec une grande confiance en la crédibilité de l’événement. Il faut cependant laisser une chance au coureur. De plus, on ne peut pas juger l’événement dans sa totalité simplement par cette situation. Je me suis donc dirigé avec curiosité au théâtre Plaza.
Une fois là-bas, j’ai tout de suite constaté l’excellent choix de la salle. Scène assez grande pour contenir plusieurs personnes, un grand nombre de places pour les spectateurs, près du métro. Bref, ce fût une bonne décision. Un peu plus tard, le tapis rouge. Je devais être avec d’autres médias, mais je me suis ramassé seul avec Marie derrière la caméra et le photographe de Milli Millz, Charles William Pelletier (www.charleswilliamphotography.com). De plus, lorsque les invités ont commencé à arriver, aucune barrière n’était présente, ce qui faisait en sorte qu’il n’y avait pas d’ordre dans leur entrée. Tout le monde marchait un peu partout, contrairement au traditionnel tapis rouge où l’on avance en ligne droite.
Par la suite, le gala. Magnum 357 à ouvert le bal avec son hit Expos Fitted. Même si ce n’est pas mon track préféré de ce talentueux artiste, je dois dire qu’il a bien réveiller la foule, qui attendait depuis déjà un certain temps. L’animation était assurée par Keithy Antoine, une habituée de la chose. Cependant, avec tout le respect que je dois à cette femme, je crois que ce n’était pas sa meilleure soirée. C’est peut-être à cause d’un manque de temps pour sa préparation. Reste que personnellement, je voyais que la chimie entre l’animatrice et la foule n’était pas présente et ce, pour pratiquement toute la soirée. Je tiens à mentionner que ceci n’est en aucun cas un manque de respect envers une femme qui a fait beaucoup pour promouvoir la scène Hip Hop d’ici, mais plutôt une constatation et une opinion honnête, sans méchanceté.
Le gros point positif de cette soirée, c’est l’esprit de rassemblement, d’union qui régnait dans la foule. C’est rare de voir autant d’artistes francophones et anglophones dans la même salle. Il existe une ségrégation entre les 2 scènes ici et des événements de la sorte sont nécessaires afin de les rassembler et faire aller la scène EN ENTIER, pas juste une partie de celle-ci. L’intention est là et je crois qu’avec du fignolement et une certaine restructuration, le Monteral Hip Hop Awards peut devenir un événement incontournable non seulement pour la scène d’ici, mais également auprès des médias qui n’ont aucune idée vraiment ce qu’est le Hip Hop.
Est-ce que j’aurais annoncé et décidé de faire le gala 3 semaines avant la date officielle? Non
Doit-on encourager les organisateurs à poursuivre dans leur lancée? Absolument! Leur test se trouve à être celui de l’année prochaine. Ils se doivent d’être prêt et structuré pour l’événement. Les observateurs vont s’attendre à beaucoup. Selon moi ça passe ou ça casse.
Big up à Kamistry de s’investir autant dans la cause, et j’attendrai le prochain gala avec impatience!

Let’s say that the event didn’t get agood start up. With the website droppin’ a little too soon, which led to many mistakes, I wasn’t going there confident in the credibility of the event. We have to let the people show us what they prepared before. We can’t judge the Awards in its entirety only for that situation. I came to the Plaza Theater with a lot of curiosity.
I was there early, but the choice of the location instantly popped in my head. It was an excellent choice with a big scene that can get a lot of people, the good space for the guests attending, the proximity of the metro…Good decision! Then came the red carpet. I was supposed to be other medias, but I was alone with my Marie behind the camera and the photographer of Milli Millz, Charles William Pelletier (www.charleswilliamphotography.com). When the guests started to get in, no barriers were installed. That led to a red carpet that didn’t look like one, where everybody walks everywhere, as opposed to the traditionnal one where people are in line.
Then came the gala. Magnum 357 opened the show with his Expos Fitted. Even if it’s not my favorite track from this talented MC, I must say that he captured the audience that was waiting for a certain time now. The hosting duties were given to Keithy Antoine, who’s familiar with this type of event. With all the respect I have for this lady, I don’t think that it was one of her best performance. Maybe it’s because of the very short notice, but I didn’t see a connection between the host and the audience pretty much throughout the whole evening. This is in NO WAY a diss or a lack of respect for a person that did a lot to push Hip Hop to a greater audience. It is a personnal opinion, without any mean thoughts behind it.
The positive aspect of this event is the spirit of union that was floating in the air. It’s rare to see anglophone and francophone artists all together in the same place. There’s an evident segregation between the two parts of the scene and events like this are necessary to promote our WHOLE scene, rather than just a segment of it. The thought behind the project is there and I think that with more work on the structure, more preparation, the Montreal Hip Hop Awards could become an essential not only for us Hip Hop fans and medias, but also to the bigger ones who don’t really know what Hip Hop is.
Would I prepare this type of event 3 weeks before the official date? Nope.
Should we support the organizers to pursue this adventure? Absolutely! Their biggest test is the second gala next year. They need to be on point with their structure and preparation. The observers will have a lot of expectations for that one. In my opinion, it makes it or breaks it.
